A sprawling metropolitan city with a laidback bohemian vibe – Mexico city captured my heart and attention all in 5 days. Taquerias, artisan coffee and craft beer spots are scattered on every street in the charming sought-after areas of Roma and Condesa. If you want to take a break from all that taco eating and walking around the city, there are also plenty of green areas dotted between streets where you can relax, recharge your batteries and soak up a bit of afternoon sun. Within our 5 days in Mexico City we packed in as many sights as we could, found some delicious eateries and tasted some refreshing craft beers!

Taquerías, cafés artesanales y cervezas artesanales se encuentran dispersas en cada calle en las encantadoras zonas de Roma y Condesa. Si quiere tomar un descanso de todo ese taco comiendo y caminando por la ciudad, también hay muchas áreas verdes salpicadas entre las calles donde puede relajarse, recargar sus baterías y tomar un poco de sol por la tarde. Breakfast spots
Primos – Lovely ambience, décor and service here. Take your pick from a tray of fresh pastries offered to you on arrival – its hard to say no! Morning bellinis also on offer!
Café Toscano– Italian coffee with a good menu of Italian & Mexican dishes. Fried bread very tasty.
Lalo’s *Overrated* – this was recommended in some of the guide books so we gave it a try. The food was nice but not worth the price, it felt more transactional and less authentic than other places.

Café Toscano– Café italiano con un buen menú de platos italianos y mexicanos. Pan frito muy sabroso.
Lalo’s *Sobrevalorado* – Esto se recomendó en algunas de las guías así que lo probamos. La comida era buena pero no valía la pena el precio, se sentía más transaccional y menos auténtico que otros lugares.
Lunch
Don Juan Tacos *Top Recommendation* – this is one street food stand you don’t want to miss! The best street food places are easy to spot with a queue of locals, you know then that the meat will be fresh due to the regular turnover. I ordered 3 Cerdo (pork) tacos, stacked high with guacamole & salsa. They look small but they are so filling, 3 was more than enough! Not only did they taste better than any other tacos i tried, they were also the cheapest at only $30 pesos / £1 GBP per taco! The saying goes, you should eat tacos standing up so that you don’t get full as quickly! We did just that, perching our tacos on a ledge, and they tasted so good.
Tacquerte – This is a great taco chain if you want to ease yourself in before heading for the street food! I love that they bring you a wide array of salsas and dips with nachos to start.

Don Juan Tacos *Recomendación principal* – ¡este es un puesto de comida callejera que no se puede perder! Los mejores lugares de comida callejera son fáciles de detectar con una cola de locales, ya sabe que la carne estará fresca debido a la rotación regular. Pedí 3 tacos de cerdo, apilados con guacamole y salsa. Se ven pequeños pero son tan llenando, ¡3 fue más que suficiente! ¡No solo sabían mejor que cualquier otro taco que probé, sino que también eran los más baratos con solo $30 pesos / £1 GBP por taco! El dicho dice: ¡debe comer tacos mientras pie para que no te llenes tan rápido! Hicimos exactamente eso, colocando nuestros tacos en una repisa, y sabían tan bien.
Tacquerte – ¡Esta es una gran cadena de tacos antes de dirigirse a la comida callejera! Me encanta que te traigan una gran variedad de salsas con nachos para comenzar.
Dinner
La Bikina – Authentic Mexican food. We went with Mexican friends who ordered some traditional dishes for us to try. Chicharrón (fried pork belly) is delicious and tastes like pork scratchings – its incredible with guacamole. Esquites callejeros is a mexican snack worth a try made from corn, mayo, spices and cheese.
El Califa Taqueria – Great taco spot and excellent service. We tried a mixture of tacos at different price points and different meats but I think the best tacos were still the basic Al Pastor ones! We had 2 rounds of them.
Proper Burger – The biggest burgers I have ever laid eyes on! Make sure you are hungry when you visit as you will have a serious food coma afterwards! A bit further out of the city, but worth a visit if you are craving a tasty burger.
Cena
La Bikina – Auténtica comida mexicana. Fuimos con amigos mexicanos que pidieron algunos platos tradicionales para probar. El chicharrón (panceta de cerdo frita) es delicioso y sabe de cerdo rasguñando, es increíble con guacamole. Esquites callejeros es una merienda mexicana que vale la pena probar hecho de maíz, mayonesa, especias y queso.
El Califa Taqueria – Gran lugar de tacos y excelente servicio. Probamos una mezcla de tacos a diferentes precios y diferentes carnes, pero creo que los mejores tacos seguían siendo los básicos de Al Pastor. Tuvimos 2 rondas de ellos.
Proper Burger – ¡Las hamburguesas más grandes que he visto! ¡Asegúrese de tener hambre cuando lo visite, ya que tendrá un coma alimentario severo después! Un poco más lejos de la ciudad, pero vale la pena visitarlo si anhelas una sabrosa hamburguesa.
DRINKING
Boicot café – Blues café with a cool vibe, good music, coffee and milkshakes.
Fiebre de Malta – Choose from a selection of over 20 craft beers with their creative paint chart menu of beers. Each beer card shows you the origin of the beer, suggested pint size to drink, alcohol percentage and more.
El Depósito – Local microbrewery with a great selection of bespoke beers to try and experts on hand to help you choose! Poorly lit creating a grungy vibe to it.
Mercado Roma – This is an amazing place we stumbled upon with a beer garden style seating area at the back of the market. You can order food, drink and desserts (churros yum!) from any part of the market. The music and bustling atmosphere make this a relaxing spot to spend a few hours!
Pepe’s café “with a view” *Avoid* – when you visit Cathedral Metropolitano there will be lots of cafes trying to get you up to their café with the promise of great views over the square. We regretfully fell for this! When we got to the top after trekking up the levels of stairs, all the window seats with a view were taken, and we were plonked on a table at the back with an overpriced terrible cup of coffee. Avoid if you can!
BEBIENDO
Boicot café – Café de blues con un ambiente genial, buena música, café y batidos.
Fiebre de Malta – Elija entre una selección de más de 20 cervezas artesanales con su creativo menú de cervezas. Cada tarjeta de cerveza le muestra el origen de la cerveza, el tamaño sugerido para beber, el porcentaje de alcohol y más.
El Depósito – ¡Microcervecería local con una gran selección de cervezas a medida para probar y expertos disponibles para ayudarlo a elegir! Mal iluminado creando un ambiente oscuro.
Mercado Roma – Este es un lugar increíble con el que nos topamos con una zona de asientos estilo jardín de cerveza en la parte trasera del mercado. Puedes pedir comida, bebida y postres (¡churros!) desde cualquier parte del mercado. ¡La música y el ambiente bullicioso hacen de este un lugar relajante para pasar unas horas!
El café de Pepe “con vista” *Evite* – cuando visite la Catedral Metropolitana, habrá muchos cafés que intentarán llevarlo a su café con la promesa de excelentes vistas de la plaza. ¡Nos arrepentimos de esto! Cuando llegamos a la cima después de subir los niveles de las escaleras, todos los asientos de las ventanas con vista estaban ocupados, y nos dejaron en una mesa en la parte de atrás con una taza de café demasiado cara. ¡Evítalo si puede!
WHERE TO STAY IN MEXICO CITY

We stayed in the Roma area, with the neighbouring district of Condesa, both of which were recommended to us by friends living in the city. I absolutely loved this location, not only was it surrounded by endless food and drink places to choose from, it also had a friendly laid-back vibe to it which made it feel homely.
To give some idea of cost, a hotel in the Roma neighbourhood (Hotel O Monarca) cost $625 MXN / £25 GBP per night. These prices are correct as at January 2020.
Nos quedamos en el área de Roma, con el distrito vecino de Condesa, ambos recomendados por amigos que viven en la ciudad. Me encantó esta ubicación, no solo estaba rodeada de infinitos lugares de comida y bebida para elegir, sino que también tenía un ambiente agradable y relajado que la hacía sentir hogareña.
Para dar una idea del costo, un hotel en el barrio de Roma (Hotel O Monarca) cuesta $625 MXN / £ 25 GBP por noche. Estos precios son correctos a enero de 2020.
WILL I FEEL SAFE IN MEXICO CITY?

Honestly, yes. Before we arrived, I felt very apprehensive about Mexico in general, and in particular Mexico City. We were arriving at 4.30am local time, with fresh faces and shiny new rucksacks which didn’t help me feel any more at ease! I had heard lots of things about it being unsafe and to make sure you look after your belongings. I wore my money belt the whole first day and was extremely cautious. But despite all of the pre anticipation, what I experienced was a friendly city and even friendlier people. I can only speak for the area we stayed in (Roma), and the spots we visited and walked through (such as Condesa), but these all felt safe and I didn’t once feel intimidated.
Honestamente, si. Antes de llegar, me sentí muy preocupado por México en general, y en particular por la Ciudad de México. Llegamos a las 4.30 a.m., hora local, con caras frescas y mochilas nuevas y brillantes que no me ayudaron a sentirme más a gusto. Había escuchado muchas cosas sobre que no era seguro y para asegurarme de que cuidaras sus pertenencias. Llevé mi cinturón de dinero todo el primer día y fui extremadamente cauteloso. Pero a pesar de toda la anticipación, lo que experimenté fue una ciudad amigable e incluso personas más amigables. Solo puedo hablar por el área en la que nos alojamos (Roma) y los lugares que visitamos y atravesamos (como Condesa), pero todos estos se sintieron seguros y nunca me sentí intimidado.
GETTING AROUND MEXICO CITY

UBERs are a cheap and convenient way to get around the city, at around $100 pesos / £4 GBP for a 20-minute journey. It was recommended to us by friends living in the city, that it was safer to use UBERs over local taxis. There were plenty of available taxis all with the pink CDMX branding on, we didn’t try them ourselves so I can’t comment on the safety or price of these. Although Mexico City is huge, with a population of 25 million inhabitants, most of what you will want to see is within walking distance so as long as you have the time it’s worthwhile walking rather than getting a taxi. It’s both a great way to see the city and burn off those tacos from earlier in the day!
Los UBER son una forma económica y conveniente de moverse por la ciudad, con alrededor de $100 pesos / £4 GBP para un viaje de 20 minutos. Los amigos que viven en la ciudad nos recomendaron que era más seguro usar los UBER en lugar de los taxis locales. Había muchos taxis disponibles, todos con la marca CDMX rosa, no los probamos nosotros mismos, así que no puedo comentar sobre la seguridad o el precio de estos. WHAT TO PACK FOR MEXICO CITY

This is dependent upon the time of year you visit, however in December/ January the locals mainly wore jeans and a jumper. There are even street vendors wearing full winter coats! Although its around 25 degrees celsius, the city is mostly shaded due to the number of buildings, so it can get a little cooler out of the sun. A long skirt or trousers and a t-shirt will be perfect, and a jumper if you are continuing on into the evening as the temperature does drop enough to feel chilly. “Gringos” as the locals call tourists, are easy to spot in their shorts and t-shirts! So wearing jeans or long trousers will definitely help you to fit in better with the locals.
Esto depende de la época del año que visite, sin embargo, en Diciembre / Enero, los lugareños usaron principalmente jeans y un jersey. ¡Incluso hay vendedores que usan abrigos de invierno completos!
