1. watch the sunset from within the city walls

This is something that both tourists and locals take part in. Watching the sun go down behind the sea from the ancient walled city was nice and relaxing after the heat of the day. Get there for 5.30pm and settle in to one of small grooves in the wall cosy enough for 2 people. Local vendors sell cans of beer for $5,000 COP / £1 GBP that you can buy once you have found your spot, they will come to you. The sun sets around 6.30pm (Feb), and it’s a great atmosphere with both locals and tourists positioned along and within the walls, watching the sun go down with a cold Club Colombia in hand. Café del mar nearby is also popular, if you want a fancy cocktail whilst watching the sun set. Table reservations recommended. However, if you only want beers then you can get the same experience for much cheaper prices just meters away!
Esto es algo en lo que participan turistas y lugareños. Ver el sol ponerse detrás del mar desde la antigua ciudad amurallada fue agradable y relajante después del calor del día. Llegue allí a las 5.30 p.m. y acomódese en uno de los pequeños surcos en la pared lo suficientemente acogedor para dos personas. Los vendedores locales venden latas de cerveza por $5,000 COP / £1 GBP que se puede comprar una vez que haya encontrado su lugar, vendrán a sí. If you want to learn some of the history of Cartagena de Indias and how they fought off the English attempts to conquer the city with the castle and nearby forts, then this is a great place to visit. $25,000 COP / £7 GBP each for entry, there is plenty to explore. It has been reconstructed so you can even walk inside the tunnels that stretch for 400m underground. Make sure you don’t miss the small house labelled “hospital” with a red stop clock outside. It looks like an official building that isn’t part of the tourist viewings so we almost missed this. But there is a video played inside an extremely air-coned room for 10 minutes that gives you all the background you need to know on the castle and its history. If nothing else than it’s a welcome rest bite from the heat!
Getting there; only a 10 minute walk from Getsemani area. Total time to walk around was c2 hours, so it’s a good half-day activity.
Si quiere aprender algo de la historia de Cartagena de Indias y cómo lucharon contra los intentos ingleses de conquistar la cuidad con el castillo y las fortalezas cercanas, entonces este es un gran lugar para visitar. $25,000 COP / £7 GBP cada uno para la entrada, hay mucho por explorar. Ha sido reconstruido para incluso pueda caminar dentro de los túneles que se extienden por 400 metros bajo tierra. Asegurarse de no perderse la pequeña casa etiquetada “hospital” con un cronómetro rojo afuera. Parece un edifico oficial que no forma parte de las visitas turísticas, por lo que casi nos perdimos esto. Pero hay un video reproducido dentro de una sala con aire acondicionado durante 10 minutos que le brinda toda la información que necesita saber sobre el castillo y su historia. Si nada más, ¡es un agradable descanso del calor!
Llegar allí; a solo 10 minutos a pie del área de Getsemani. El tiempo total para caminar fue de aproximadamente 2 horas, por lo que es una buena actividad de medio día.
3. Explore the artwork of Getsemani’s DISTRICT

The district of Getsemani is packed full of street-art, from big murals spread across houses and restaurants, to small allies crammed full of individual art. Every piece as colourful as the next, the array of artwork brings vibrance to the streets. Some of it is fun, some beautiful, and others tell a story.
Callejón Angosto in Getsemani, a small unassuming street lined with artwork, is a must see. When you visit make sure to look up and you will see the narrow street lined with colourful umbrellas, making the street art colours pop.
El distrito de Getsemani está lleno de arte callejero, desde grandes murales repartidos por casas y restaurantes, hasta pequeños aliados repletos de arte individual. Cada pieza tan colorida como la siguiente, la variedad de obras de arte aporta vitalidad a las calles. Algunos son divertidos, otros hermosos y otros cuentan una historia.
Callejón Angosto en Getsemani, una pequeña calle sin pretensiones llena de obras de arte es una visita obligada. Cuando visites, asegúrate de mirar hacia arriba y verás la calle estrecha bordeada de coloridos paraguas, haciendo que los colores del arte callejero destaquen.
4. CATCH A SPEEDBOAT TO PLAYA BLANCA

If you want to get away from the heat of the city for a day there are a few beaches you can reach by bus or speedboat. Playa Blanca (literally meaning White Beach) is a beautiful spot to relax, away from the bustle of Cartagena and worth visiting for the day. It is situated on Isla Baru, one of Colombia’s Rosario Islands along the Caribbean. It truly has white sands and clear blue water, although the tide is very strong so be careful not to venture too far out.
Some people stay there a night or more to spend time there when the all day tourists have gone. We visited in February and it wasn’t too busy. There are options to do day boat trip tours lasting 2-4 hours that take you to a park near the Rosario Islands to snorkel and then on to Playa Blanca for an hour and lunch and back. We wanted to spend more time actually at Playa Blanca so decided to just enjoy the day in one place.
Getting there; there are a few different ways you can get there, a boat trip tour as mentioned above, a 2 hour overland bus journey or a 45 minute speed boat. The speedboat is more costly but seemed worth it to us given the convenience of getting there quickly! Although, I would advise that if you have any kind of back problems to not go on the speedboat as they really throw you about!
The most useful tip I can give you if you are getting the boat is to get there early. To get back from Playa Blanca the last boat leaves at 3pm so you want to leave ample time to get there and enjoy your day before you need to leave again.
To get a ticket for the speedboat, head to Carrerra 7 infront of the clock tower Monument early morning (no later than 9am). There you will be approached by local sellers. Haggle, haggle, and haggle some more. The price will start high at around $80,000 COP / £20 GBP each for a return ticket, the sellers will show you a nice print out laminate and will tell you that is the set price. That price soon comes down so long as you can use a few Spanish phrases “demasiado caro” (too expensive). The price will keep coming down. We agreed on a price of $35,000 COP each without a lunch included plus $10,000 in tax as you are leaving from the main port. So $40,000 COP / £10 GBP each (half the initial price). There is another port you can get the boat from with no tax required but it is more challenging to find.
Whoever sold you the ticket will then take you to the port not far away. Make sure you don’t give them the money until you have an actual ticket to go through the barriers with. You will then wait on a set of plastic chairs with the other tourists until there are enough people to leave for the speedboat.
On the way back you will be looking for the same boat and driver that took you there. They will tell you when you get off the boat what time to be there for. If they say 3pm, make sure you are ready to leave at quarter to so that it doesn’t go without you!
Si quiere alejarse del calor de la ciudad por un día, hay algunas playas a las que puede llegar en autobús o lancha rápida. Playa Blanca (que literalmente significa Playa Blanca) es un hermoso lugar para relajarse, lejos del bullicio de Cartagena y vale la pena visitar por el día. Está situado en Isla Barú, una de las Islas del Rosario en Colombia a lo largo del Caribe. Realmente tiene arenas blancas y agua azul clara, aunque la marea es muy fuerte, así que tenga cuidado de no aventurarse demasiado lejos.
Algunas personas se quedan allí una noche o más para pasar el tiempo allí cuando los turistas se ir hogar por el día. Visitamos en febrero y no estaba demasiado ocupado. Hay opciones para hacer excursiones de un día en barco que duran de 2 a 4 horas que lo llevan a un parque cerca de las Islas del Rosario para hacer snorkel y luego a Playa Blanca durante una hora, almuerzo y regreso. Queríamos pasar más tiempo en realidad en Playa Blanca, así que decidimos disfrutar el día en un solo lugar.
Llegar allí; Hay algunas maneras diferentes de llegar, un recorrido en barco como se mencionó anteriormente, un viaje en autobús por tierra de 2 horas o una lancha rápida de 45 minutos. ¡La lancha rápida es más costosa, pero nos pareció que valió la pena dada la conveniencia de llegar rápidamente! Sin embargo, se aconsejaría que, si tiene algún tipo de problema de espalda, ¡no suba a la lancha rápida porque realmente se arrojan!
El consejo más útil que puedo darse si va a tomar el bote es llegar temprano. Para regresar de Playa Blanca, el último barco sale a las 3 p.m., por lo que debe dejar suficiente tiempo para llegar allí y disfrutar de su día antes de que tenga que partir nuevamente.

5. Go hunting FOR SLOTHS at parque del centenario

Wild sloths, iguanas, monkeys, and red squirrels can all be seen within the small and sparse Parque del Centenario. At first glance I thought no animals could possibly live here, with minimal greenery or even leaves on the trees. Locals will help you locate them (for a small tip of course!), we saw both an adult and baby sloth high up in the tree! I have been wanting to see a wild sloth for a long time and I finally saw one in the most unexpected place only 5 minutes walk from our accommodation within the edge of the Old Walled city! Not only that, there are a handful of huge iguanas, red squirrels, monkeys and a variety of birds. Having missed out on Tayrona National Park where Sloths can be spotted, this was an amazing opportunity to see Sloths in the wild for the first time!
Perezosos salvajes, iguanas, monos y ardillas rojas se pueden ver en el pequeño y escaso Parque del Centenario. A primera vista, pensé que ningún animal podría vivir aquí, con una vegetación mínima o incluso hojas en los árboles. Los lugareños lo ayudarán a localizarlos (¡por un poco de dinero, por supuesto!), ¡Vimos a un adulto y un bebé perezoso en lo alto del árbol! ¡Hace mucho tiempo que quería ver a un perezoso salvaje y finalmente lo vi en el lugar más inesperado a solo 5 minutos a pie de nuestro alojamiento en las afueras de la ciudad amurallada! No solo eso, hay un puñado de iguanas enormes, ardillas rojas, monos y una variedad de aves. Después de perderse el Parque Nacional Tayrona, donde se puede ver a los perezosos, ¡esta fue una oportunidad increíble para ver a los perezosos en la naturaleza por primera vez!

Cartagena has some incredible architecture including the dome of San Pedro Claver church which is best viewed from a rooftop bar with an Aperol Spritz in hand!
Sophia Hotel’s rooftop bar (calle 32) allows you to see panoramic views of Cartagena City in a more than comfortable setting, with an onsite DJ creating a relaxed day party vibe. Stay here until the sunsets, or have a few pre-drinks in the sunshine before heading to the walled city to watch the sunset behind the sea.
Nearby, Alquimico is another rooftop bar, slightly higher that Sophia’s but a tad further away from the dome.
Cartagena tiene una arquitectura increíble, incluida la cúpula de la iglesia de San Pedro Claver, que se ve mejor desde un bar en la azotea con un Aperol Spritz en la mano.
El bar de la azotea del hotel Sophia (calle 32) le permite ver vistas panorámicas de la ciudad de Cartagena en un entorno más que cómodo, con un DJ en el lugar que crea un ambiente relajado de fiesta. Quédese aquí hasta los atardeceres, o tome un poco de bebida antes de dirigirse a la ciudad amurallada para ver la puesta de sol detrás del mar.
Cerca, Alquimico es otro bar en la azotea, un poco más alto que el de Sophia, pero un poco más alejado de la cúpula.

For a very cheap relaxing night, or a couple of pre-drinks before heading on to a bar, stroll along to the Getsemani district (Carerra 10 between Calle 30-31) for a spontaneous street party. Tourists and locals hang about under lines of bunting, sitting on the curbs, bottles of beer in hand, watching the world go by. There is music from nearby bars, and a couple of food options along the street for a grab and go option. Get yourself a couple of drinks from the local off-license, join in and soak up the atmosphere.
Para una noche relajante muy barata, o un par de bebidas antes de dirigirse a un bar, pasee por el distrito Getsemani (Carerra 10 entre la calle 30-31) para una fiesta callejera espontánea. Turistas y lugareños reunierse bajo líneas de bunting, sentados en los bordillos, con botellas de cerveza en la mano, mirando pasar el mundo. Hay música de bares cercanos, y un par de opciones de comida a lo largo de la calle para una opción para llevar. Consíguete un par de bebidas de la licencia local, únete y disfruta de la atmósfera.
